Kingfoto traces its origins back to Pematang Siantar, a small town in North Sumatra.
It was Gunawan Leonardi, the founder that started this business fifty-eight years
ago. At the age of seventeen, young Gunawan, already had an obsession to bring
the photography business to the honored position. Gunawan opened his first photo
studio, Hollywood Photo in Pematang Siantar. Then he moved to Medan, capital city
of North Sumatra and opened Cathay Photo. Later on, as the business grew, he changed
the name to Karya Foto. Confident that the business would prove an even greater
success in a bigger city, Gunawan moved to Jakarta in 1971, where he established
King’s Photo. This name was used until 1995, when government policy required
that foreign brand name be changed to local ones. Thus King’s Photo becomes
King Foto. Gunawan’s passion for photography was inherited by his two sons,
who have played key roles in the business since 1987, having completed his business
management studies in the University of Southern California in the US, Michael
Leonardi, the eldest son, returned to Indonesia to help develop the business.
Today, Michael is Kingfoto’s managing director.

Indra Leonardi, the younger son, is a director in the company. He graduated from
the Brooks Institute of Photography in California. In 1995, Indra was awaded by
Professional Photographer of America as the Master of Photography, the youngest
and only photographer in ASEAN to receive this award.

After more than half century, through a serious commitment, consistent and focused
efforts, and hard works, Gunawan Leonardi’s obsession is now being realized.
Today, based on the corporate philosolphy - “We need(s) to be better”-
the company keep developing and investing in its human resources and technological
equipment.
